ZMA
Recommendation
Not recommended, see component ingredients and make an informed decision on each. ZMA is a copyrighted name and the company behind it conducted the only study which reinforces its efficacy, since supplements are not regulated by the FDA, if a company carries a poor reputation, your health may be on the line. ZMA consists of zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6 supplements. See safety section to learn if it is safe for you. See usage section for dosing and plans.
About
ZMA is a mixture of zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6 supplements. ZMA stands for Zinc Magnesium Aspartate -- aspartate being the chelating agent used for the magnesium supplement in ZMA. ZMA is a copyrighted term owned by SNAC, a company which conducted refuted studies on the effectiveness of ZMA.
Forms
ZMA is a copyrighted term owned by SNAC as well as ZMA-5 and ZMA Nightcap which contain different 4th ingredients to change the mixture. ZMA is only sold as capsules under the SNAC brand
Benefits
ZMA is purported to increase testosterone (study partially funded and contributed to by owner of ZMA copyright) and aid with sleep. No further studies backed up this claim. One consideration is that a lack of zinc and magnesium can lead to lower testosterone so rather than being a booster, it is likely just a normalizer. See the pages for zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6 to see benefits not linked to their mixing.
Safety
See the pages for zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6 to see potential side effects from over or under dosing.
Combinations
No known potentially dangerous combinations
Usage
Take 3 capsules daily for men and 2 capsules daily for women, preferably on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes prior to bedtime. For best results, avoid taking with foods or supplements containing calcium.
